Doctors Think Electronic Health Records Are Hurting Their Relationships With Patients

In furthering our discussions about Electronic Health Records, I thought I would share this article I came across during my research. Doctors spend too much time sifting through computer screens and pdf files, instead of interacting with patients. There's no eye contact or any semblance of personal interaction. The job has simply become data entry, instead of providing care.

  1. Partly true. Not for everyone. Not sure what you read that suggests EHRs are more than a headache. There are number of reading that certainly suggest they are not very usable, but not in all cases.

Many work incredibly well, and Epic has had to offer APIs to allow third parties to create better applications that work with the vendor. There is a chapter in Wachter's book, "Epic and Athena" and I can copy that for you.  It may give you new insights. Also check out Chapter 4 on the book's resources link. https://www.informaticseducation.org/resource-center

I would by no means leave this regulation to Congress.  Tech companies are working on this full time. HIPAA is over regulated in my opinion and not sure the role it plays here, so make that clear. More reading (and posting) on the topic is needed.
